BeyondHome Website
BeyondHome is a non-profit that helps families escape poverty and homelessness with access to safe housing, training and education. The goal of this project was to redesign their website so it felt modern, boost donations and volunteering.
Too many layers
A site audit revealed that key program information and the application form were buried under several menus and clicks. This was making information hard to find instead of being front and centre.
Problems with forms
Application forms on the website were long, but they were submitting each section as a separate form instead of being a single completed form. This meant each staff had to match each section together for each application - wasting time.
Outdated look and feel
The existing website had been made by staff at BeyondHome, and hadn't been updated in a while. The website wasn't projecting confidence and this was echoed in stakeholder interviews with staff.
Improving the navigation
I worked on the information architecture for the website first. The main aim was to make the program pages and application form easier to find and reduce the cognitive load for the users. I then sketched up ideas for the site layout once I had tested and finalised the new sitemap.
Updating the look and feel
I introduced Poppins as a new sans-serif typeface for the website to improve legibility. I also took the brand colours and reused them to make the website feel fresh and professional and updated the images to high-resolution ones.
Feedback from stakeholders and users
"The website looks much more professional. I feel confident and proud of this and believe it will help everyone." - lead program manager
"The forms working properly is massive for us. This will allow us to help people much faster!" - application manager
Fresh look and feel
The website had been redesigned with a new colour palette, typography and images. The new navigation pushed program information and the application forms to the top and made finding key information easier and faster.
Fixed forms
Application forms were now submitting as a single document instead of in sections, which would save staff a lot of time.
